Thanks to the generosity of local park users, a generous grant from the City of Edinburgh Council’s Community Fund, and, most recently the award of £2150 from the National Lottery Community Fund, we have now exceeded our target! The project is now fully funded and can go ahead this school year. We would like to put the excess funds towards another park-enhancing project so will be asking for creative suggestions at our next Friends meeting on 6th December!

Your chance to help transform the old Victoria Park Pumphouse into a work of art!

Have you noticed the drab and graffitied building at the corner of the allotments on the Ferry Road side of Victoria Park called the Pumphouse? Friends of Victoria Park (FoVP) would like to commission experienced artist Chris Rutterford to work with students from Trinity Academy to produce a mural on all 4 walls of the Pumphouse walls to brighten that corner of the park. The design of the mural will be created by the students under Chris’ supervision inspired by its setting, for example the plants, animals and activities found in the park. The project will allow Trinity Academy students to develop their artistic skills, help foster a sense of local community and pride and discourage graffiti.

What could the mural look like?

An example of a mural created by Chris Rutherford with students at Firrhill High School can be seen in the photo below. Chris also transformed the Colinton Tunnel with a 140m long mural into a popular attraction for locals and visitors alike.

How much is needed?

Friends of Victoria Park (FoVP) has received a grant of £2,500 from the City of Edinburgh Council Community Fund and is looking to raise a further £2,500 to cover the total cost. FoVP is applying to other potential sources of funding, but it is not certain that we will be successful and we want to be sure that the mural can go ahead. Every donation, no matter how small, will bring us a step closer to realising this project and making Victoria Park an even nicer place to play, exercise and relax in.

What happens if not enough is raised?

If we fail to raise the money required then all contributions raised by the crowdfunder will be retained by FoVP to be applied towards the cost of future projects for the benefit of Victoria Park and its users.  In the event that we raise more than is needed for the mural, any balance will be held to be used for future projects in the park, Ideas suggested so far include a fitness circuit, more play equipment, tree labelling and an additional perennial wildflower meadow.
