West Common is an attractive semi-natural open space, comprising the cliff tops and foreshore of the forth of Tay, below the small village of Tayport. The space affords and is defined by panoramic views of estuary, Broughty Ferry on the opposite bank and out across to the beaches around Budden Ness. Rough paths lead down across rocks to the sea.
The main, coastal cyclepath on an old disused railway line. Houses look down on the rough grass/ heathland, vegetation comprises, scrubby trees, gorses and ruderal vegetation, with rabbit grazed open grass areas. The disused railway line is on the route of the Fife Coastal Path.
