The Friends of Glasgow Necropolis project to fund, conserve and restore the historic Monteath Mausoleum

This wonderful Mausoleum is the final resting place of two brothers Major Archibald Douglas Monteath who died in 1842, and James Monteath Douglas who died in 1850.

The Mausoleum which was designed by David Cousin and is 30ft is in need of improvements to both the structure and the overall appearance of the surrounding grounds.

Built for Major Archibald Douglas Monteath who served in the East India Company before returning to Glasgow the Mausoleum has become an established part of the Glasgow skyline. Monteath made his fortune when an elephant carrying precious gems belonging to a Maharajah was captured and ‘relieved’ of its load by him. When he died £1,000 was left to build his monument. There was a shortfall, however the Merchants House gifted the extra land needed and this spectacular mausoleum was built. Based on the Knights Templar Church of the Holy Sepulchre, experts dispute whether it is modelled on the Jerusalem Church or the possibly their Cambridge Church. This 30ft diameter Neo-Norman rotunda has grotesque faces around the doorway and each niched window has a different design. In 1850 Monteath’s brother, James Douglas Monteath of Rosehall and Stonebyres was also interred here.

It is an unusual building, being neo-Norman design in the cemetery that contains predominantly classical monuments.

The images below show not only the detailed design of the Mausoleum but also demonstrate the need for restoration of this important building.

FAQs

If the full total isn’t achieved will the money collected be able to be used for this project?

Firstly thanks for your question and interest in the Monteath Mausoleum Restoration Project.

If the full amount is not reached the Friends of Glasgow Necropolis will look to see what they can achieve with the funds they have received. We will contact all donors to inform them of this if this is the case. The Friends group are looking at what other sources of funding and support are available to achieve the funding goal.

I hope this answers your question, if you have any more questions please get in touch.

Regards
MyParkScotland Team

The small print – supporting a project

MyParkScotland provides a safe and easy way to make a donation to support this great project.

To make a donation, click on ‘Support Now’ and select your choice of Gift Level. If you are a UK tax payer, selecting a Level which includes Gift Aid means that we can top up your donation at no extra cost to you. Adding Gift Aid typically means that your online donation of, for example, £10 becomes a park investment of £11.53 (after paying platform and management fees). You need to provide your address to enable us to claim Gift Aid.

Gift Aid is a Government scheme which allows charities to increase the value of donations made to them. Gift Aid makes a huge difference to small charities and local organisations, but if they aren’t registered with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator and HMRC, they can’t claim Gift Aid (and many that could claim Gift Aid don’t because they find the process too complicated). At MyParkScotland, we take care of the claim process on eligible donations, so that the Friends and community groups can concentrate on the great work they do in our parks.

We use PayPal to manage online donations and they charge a small platform fee for handling donations. We work hard to keep our fees as low as possible to make sure that as much of each donation as possible is invested in our parks. For donations without Gift Aid, at least 92% of your donation is invested in parks. MyParkScotland is a not-for-profit registered Scottish charity (No. SC045424) and any fees taken go towards covering essential operating costs.

You can find out more information about Gift Aid and MyParkScotland fees in the main Small Print section.

The current fundraising amount on the website is correct. Before the Covid 19 shutdown talks were going on with the Conservation Architect involved as to how to work a Phased restoration of the Monteath. Phase one being from the top down to the lower roof making the Mausoleum wind and watertight. These discussions are currently stalled.
